In a class that I was teaching the other night one of my students told me that saying that I teach applications in Tai Chi or saying that I do martial arts was scaring people away from my classes. Because people are looking for the heath and energy work that is in Tai Chi and not the applications. I told her that by teaching the applications in Tai Chi you get more of the health benefits and energy work.
Doing Tai Chi without the understanding of the applications, there is no reason to do the forms right and if you are not doing the movements right, the benefits and the energy that can be done in Tai Chi are greatly reduced.
Tai chi has been know as a martial arts for over 500 years and people over the last 50 years have seen the health benefits that are a part of doing Tai Chi. So they teach Tai Chi for health and exercise with no understanding of the movements that they are doing. Way would you take out the applications that are in Tai Chi and still think that you are getting the health benefits and energy work.
I have often said that doing Tai Chi for health or for energy work is like taking a cake and only wanting the sugar or the chi and still wanting to call it a cake or Tai Chi. Like a cake there are a lot of parts that make up Tai Chi and if you remove any parts of what makes up a cake you cant call what is left over cake or Tai Chi.
This doesn’t mean that you are doing combat Tai Chi because often times combat leads to being to physical in your Tai Chi and you are trying to relax. This means that you need a better understanding of how the energy moves throw the body to apply the applications.
Later in that class I was showing the student how the energy moves throw the body and the student said that is what people wont to learn. I have to teach how the energy moves throw the body because to do the applications one needs to know how the energy moves throw the body or you can't do the applications without being physical.
I might do some writing on how the energy moves throw the body latter in the Journal.
