Yang Cheng-fu 1st section

9/4/2014

Yang- style of Tai Chi Chuan is one of the most widely practiced forms of Tai Chi. Yang style was developed by Yang Lu-chan (1799-1872) after studying in the chen village for 12 years and from this training he developed Yang style.

I found this video by Matthias Wagner on youtube and I am adding lower thirds with the names of the forms. I am using the names that I have found on a form list of Yang Cheng-fu considered the best-known teacher of Yang-style Tai Chi Chuan. Yang Cheng-fu is the grandson of Yang Lu-chan and the son of Yang Chien-how. Yang Cheng-fu was one of the first teachers to offer Tai Chi Chuan instruction to the general public.

After adding the lower thirds on the video I see that there is a lot of forms that are being left out of the sequence. The images sometimes jumps one or two forms and like in Grasping Sparrow’s Tail that will leave out three or four movements like Roll Back, Press, and Push. This expanse some of the Yang-style forms that I see being done today. At the library there is a video of a person doing Yang-style and when I looked at the video I could see that the person was missing the transitions from one form to the other like he had learned it from a book. Most of the applications in Tai Chi are being done in the transitions. Years latter teaching Tai Chi I had a student that studied with that person in the video and he said that he was teaching from a book. Over the years I have had students that study from that teacher and others like him and when I try to correct the form they all tell me that is not what their teacher had shown them.

The most common thing that I see in someone’s Yang-style form Lifting Up Hands and then the transition to White Crane Flaps Wings is that a movement and an application is missing. In both the form list and the video images that was also missing and would of  helped the transition and that is why I think that some people are learning and teaching out of a books.

The grayed out images are what is seen in the video and the others are what would help with transitions. Even with this set of images the movement is hard to figure out and I know the movements. The best way to learn is to find a good teacher but that is harder to do then you think.

I will be doing second and third section video when I get them done and that will end the Yang-style form.
